According to the Detroit News, Michigan schools will be
getting more funding… hopefully. On February 5, Governor Snyder made a proposal
to raise school funding for Kindergarten- 12 schools to about 3 percent more. It
appears that Snyder has devoted his time in office to make a change for the
youth of our state.
“Preparing
Michigan’s next generation is a good investment.” The Detroit News
It’s about time! Why wouldn’t we
invest in the children that will take over our positions when we can’t carry
out our everyday jobs? I know for a fact that I want a well educated,
well-rounded child to replace me as a teacher. I will know that my job is being
well taken care of by a child who has had all the proper training schools can
give.
With all Rick Snyder’s support for
schools there is hope for our children’s future after all!
In the beginning, education
funding did take a large budget cut. Once the state’s funding increased, then
education began seeing a positive increase. With the increase in state funding,
that gap is coming to a close.
Of course everything can’t be
sunshine and rainbows. While many public schools are benefiting from this
increase in funding, Charter schools appear to be left behind. Since many
charter schools don’t offer pensions, this increase does nothing for them.
Charter schools are looking to push for a change in their school funding that
will help them and their students. The Detroit News states that, “These alternative schools receive about $1,500 less
per student than their traditional public school counterparts.”
This seems unfair to these children. Right?! $1,500 LESS! That’s
equivalent to a laptop or an iPad for each student. While children in
traditional public schools are becoming more prepared for the future, we are
leaving other children behind. The governor has stated that they are lifting
off the cap on schools budgeting and allowing for schools to make their own
choices. Hopefully this will help Charter schools.
All in all, Governor Snyder’s proposal is a win-win for
everyone. Our children will get the education they need and schools will get a financial
help they may need. Our number one
priority in our lives is making sure our families and friends have everything
they need. Our children need an outstanding education to survive in this world
now and schools are trying to make sure of that. We are spending our money
where we should be… in our children’s schools. In Michigan schools.
