Arts in the School

Saving the Arts

In case you weren't already aware, schools have been cutting budgets. Yup. Gone are the days where we were priviledged enough to have a school where anything was possible. Want music, art, and languages in the school? Of course! Times have changed and when the money runs out... art and music classes are the first to go. Many Michigan school districts have had to make these cuts to survive.  Detroit is refusing to let go of what they believe is important to the children. Detroit has managed to save the arts.

Detroit Public Schools are clinging to the last of the arts. Finding whatever they can, these schools are making sure that these classes remain. Donations have even been made to make sure these programs stay for a while. The United Auto Workers, Ford Motor Company, and DPS Foundation have generously donated money to support the school's art and music programs. The hope is that these classes will increase the enrollment in the K-8th grades. If they can keep the arts, maybe they can keep the students.
""Parents want the arts. Students want the arts, but most importantly, they need the arts," McAllister said."
The art and music programs are critical to a child's learning. These programs provide our children with creativity and the ability to see things from a different perspective. Not only does it aid in learning, but it creates a more positive learning environment. If we keep taking the fun out of school, students will be loose interest and worst case scenerio- drop out.
